Description: “Living Library” is a concept for game based learning, where it´s extendability based on the special bookshelf categories framework.

The story behind the game: A young man heirs an old library. He´s not that well pleased about that old, dusty and wrecked down library so he kicks a book out of one of the bookshelfs in his anger. While the book is falling and opening it sucks the character into it magically. Now the player/character finds himself in the world the book is about, example the ancient vikings, and has to solve some mysteries etc. When the stage/book is played through successfully the dusty bookshelf turns into a shiny one. The library gets revitalized part by part and that´s the story that influenced the title: “LIVING LIBRARY”.

The screen design fosters memories of old english libraries of the 19th century. There are large mahogany desks with green reading lamps. The desks are surround by oversized bookshelves covered in spiderwebs and dust. They are structured in the levels of the game and each shelf contains a category of knowledge.

• What is our game?

In this fun-loving 2D point&click-adventure the player finds him/ herself in the Stone Age where he accidentally travelled through time. By helping people invent essential things, which he needs to repair his time machine, he jumps from time period to time period to finally come back to the present.

• What does the player control?

The player controls a handsome young character named Finn; the controls work similar to well-known adventures like “monkey island” or “day of the tentacle”.

• What would we write on the packaging?

“Ever had the problem of losing parts of your time machine’s out- board engine and trying to reinvent those while travelling through history of mankind? No? Well, here we go!”

Our game is amusement, and it attracts attention through its humour which the clumsy main character represents. Despite the high level of fun, some pretty tough nuts are to be cracked, which challenge the player over and over again. That historically relevant places and settings are being conveyed along the way, gets apparently pretty much secondary.

• Why is our game different?

It’s a fun-to-play game. We go back to the famous, loved 2D-Adventure genre. Frank Fun against Gordon Graphics. Most nowaday’s games concentrate so much on high-end graphics and cool designs that they forget about the most important aspect when it comes to computer games: The fun factor! The general idea of our game is the possibility to play alone or in groups of max. 6 people. The most important thing is that the players have fun, but also learn traditional and general things about Austria. The game is splitted into more mini-games. Through a funny way we flavour boring topics like history, geography and so on, thereby it makes it interesting to learn them.

The main character of the game is the chamois, which guides you through the game. If you have problems within the game or questions you always can ask the chamois. The chamois always appears on the main-screen. If you open the main-screen the chamois tells you the most important news and the weather of your country. From time to time, the chamois will tell you a joke. When you click on the chamois a speech bubble appears beside the head of the main character. In this bubble there is a list of FAQs and an input field. Here you can type your question or a single word into and the chamois will show you possible answers. If you click on an answer, the character will read the answer and at the same time the answer is shown in the speech bubble.
